You have a notebook production line. Or you plan to buy one. But can it handle the paper you already use?
The short answer is yes. Most modern notebook lines accept a wide range of paper types. But each material has its own requirements. Pick the wrong paper, and you get jams, poor print quality, or weak binding.
In this guide, I explain what materials work with the OR‑1020A integrated line and the ZM modular line (flexo printer + ZM‑650/ZM‑1040 binder). You will learn:
Let’s match the right material to your machine.
A notebook consists of two material groups: inner pages and covers. Most production lines handle both.
2.1.Inner Page Materials
Inner pages need to be smooth, consistent, and printable. They also need to fold cleanly without cracking.
Material Type | Typical Weight (GSM) | Key Characteristics | Best For |
Writing paper (woodfree/uncoated) | 60–100 | Smooth surface, good ink absorption, folds cleanly | School exercise books, office notebooks, notepads |
Recycled paper | 70–90 | Eco‑friendly, slightly rougher texture, good strength | Eco brands, budget notebooks |
Offset paper | 70–120 | High opacity, low ink bleed, excellent print quality | Premium notebooks, journals, illustrated books |
Thermal paper | 55–80 | Heat‑sensitive coating, smooth finish | Receipt books, log books, special applications |
Kraft paper | 80–150 | High tear resistance, natural brown color | Eco notebooks, craft-style products, art journals |
Coated paper | 90–150 | Smooth, high whiteness, excellent print reproduction | High‑end notebooks, photo books |
Note: GSM means grams per square meter. Lower GSM = thinner paper. Higher GSM = thicker, more durable paper.
Covers need to be stronger than inner pages. They protect the notebook and carry branding.
Material Type | Typical Weight (GSM) | Key Characteristics | Best For |
Art board / cardstock | 200–300 | Stiff, smooth surface, prints well | Exercise book covers, standard notebooks |
Kraft board | 200–350 | High tear resistance, natural texture | Eco-friendly notebooks, kraft covers |
Coated cover paper | 180–300 | Glossy or matte finish, high-quality printing | Premium notebooks, branded products |
Laminated card | 250–350 | Water-resistant, very durable | High-use notebooks, children’s books, export |
Standard exercise books often use 70–80 gsm inner pages and 200–250 gsm cover stock.
Both the OR‑1020A integrated line and ZM modular binder use 26# stitching wire as standard. It works with all paper types listed above.
The OR‑1020A handles unwinding, printing, cutting, stitching, folding, and stacking in one continuous flow.
Processing tips:
The flexo printer processes rolls first; cut sheets transfer to the binder.
Processing tips:
Machine/Component | Min Weight | Max Weight | Notes |
OR‑1020A integrated line | 60 gsm | 300 gsm | Covers up to 300g, inner pages down to 60g |
ZM flexo printer | 60 gsm | 300 gsm | Same range as integrated line |
ZM‑650 binder | 60 gsm | 300 gsm | Accepts pre‑cut sheets |
ZM‑1040 binder | 60 gsm | 300 gsm | Wider format, same weight range |
Important: Mixing paper weights (e.g., 70g inner + 250g cover) works well if stitching heads are properly adjusted.
