Working Process of a Flexographic Printing Machine

1. Preparation of the Flexographic Plate

   • The flexographic printing process starts with preparing the flexo plate, which is a flexible, photopolymer plate engraved with the desired image or text.
   • These plates are wrapped around the printing cylinder of the machine.
   • The raised areas of the plate contain the image that will be transferred to the substrate.

2. Inking System:

   • The inking system usually consists of an anilox roller and a doctor blade.
   • The anilox roller is engraved with tiny cells that transfer a specific volume of ink to the plate. The number of cells per inch (CPI) controls the amount of ink transferred.
   • Ink is applied to the anilox roller, and the doctor blade scrapes off excess ink, leaving just enough in the cells for consistent transfer to the printing plate.

3. Ink Transfer to the Flexographic Plate:

   • The flexo plate cylinder picks up ink from the anilox roller. The ink adheres to the raised portions of the flexographic plate.

4. Substrate Feeding:

   • The substrate (printing material) such as paper, plastic, metal foil, or film, is fed into the machine.
   • The flexographic plate, which is already inked, presses against the substrate and transfers the ink.

5. Printing Process:

   • As the substrate moves through the machine, the inked image is transferred from the raised areas of the plate onto the substrate.
   • Each color has its own printing station, with multiple stations working in series for multi-color printing.

6. Drying System:

   • After each color is applied, the ink is dried using air or ultraviolet (UV) lamps. This step ensures that the substrate is ready for the next color layer without smudging.

7. Rewinding:

   • Once the printing is completed, the substrate is either cut or rewound onto rolls for further processing.
