Production Process
Design Preparation:
The process begins with the creation of the design or layout that needs to be printed. Software like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or CorelDRAW is used to prepare the image or text. The design is finalized for a single color, often in grayscale or a specific spot color (e.g., black, blue, or red).
Plate Making:
After the design is finalized, it's transferred onto an aluminum or polyester plate. The plate is coated with a light-sensitive material that hardens when exposed to light. The areas that receive exposure form the design (image area), while the unexposed areas (non-image areas) remain non-receptive to ink.
The plate is chemically processed to reinforce the ink-receptive areas and is then mounted onto the plate cylinder of the press.
Ink and Water Balance:
The plate is mounted on the plate cylinder of the press. The machine applies a thin layer of water over the plate first, which adheres only to the non-image areas. After that, ink is applied. The water-repellent image areas accept the ink, while the wet non-image areas repel it.
This balance between water and ink ensures clean and accurate printing.
Ink Transfer to the Blanket:
The inked image on the plate is transferred to a rubber blanket, which is mounted on another cylinder called the blanket cylinder.
The blanket ensures a smooth and even transfer of the image, compensating for the roughness of different printing materials.
Ink Transfer to the Paper:
The paper passes between the blanket cylinder and an impression cylinder. The impression cylinder presses the paper against the inked blanket, transferring the image from the blanket to the paper.
Only one color is printed at a time. If multiple colors are needed, the process must be repeated with different plates and inks.
Drying and Finishing:
Once printed, the ink on the paper must dry. Different drying methods are used, depending on the type of ink and paper. Conventional ink may air-dry, or faster methods like infrared drying can be used.
The printed sheets are then trimmed, folded, or cut as per the design and customer requirements.
