Double Sided Tape Applicator: Colombia Case Study

A paper converting company in Colombia takes custom orders: inserts, cards, sleeves, packaging pieces, in whatever shape and quantity the customer asks for. Every one of those pieces used to pass through a pair of hands with a roll of double-sided tape.

That is a slow way to run a business that sells speed. The company now runs two automatic double sided tape applicators, each with two heads and automatic feeding. Output on the taping step tripled, and the shift went from three operators to one.

The order closed on 25 August 2026. What makes this project worth reading is not the machine count. It is why two machines were needed, and how ten samples decided the specification.

1. Client Background

1.1 A custom shop, not a print house

The company does not sell one product. It sells the ability to produce paper-based packaging components in small and medium batches, to a customer's drawing. One week it is an insert for a cosmetics box, the next it is a shaped card for a retail display, the week after a set of sleeves cut to a size nobody stocks.

That business model puts a premium on changeover. A converter running one product for a month can afford a slow setup. A converter running forty jobs a month cannot. Every minute spent resetting a machine is a minute not billed.

1.2 The taping bench before the order

Taping ran as a manual station. An operator took a printed sheet, measured or eyeballed the tape position against a mark, peeled the liner, applied the strip, pressed it down, and stacked the piece. Three people covered a shift.

The work is simple, which is exactly why it stayed manual for so long. It is also the step that decides whether an order ships on time, because every piece has to pass through it, and no machine upstream can go faster than the taping bench can absorb.

2. Core Challenges Before Purchasing a Tape Applicator

2.1 Insufficient Production Capacity

The bench absorbed about one piece every eight to ten seconds per operator, and much slower on the large formats. Three people running flat out set the plant's ceiling, and the ceiling did not move when order volume grew. A tape applicator does not slow down at hour six of a shift.

The company's own measure of the problem was simple: they could not take a large batch order without pushing everything else back. That is a commercial limit, not just a production one.

2.2 One machine could not cover the shape range

This was the finding that shaped the order. The company's jobs run from A4-size rectangles to 49 cm inserts, and the tape goes on in widths from 2.5 cm up to 30 cm. Standard rotary blade cutting handles the rectangular work well. It does not handle a 3.8 cm wide strip with a 3 cm tape and a 5 mm margin on each side, because there is nothing left for the blade to register against.

Narrow strips and unusual outlines need a different cut: scissors. Scissors cost more per machine, run slower, and are the only way to cut tape cleanly on a piece that gives the blade no straight edge to work with.

2.3 Tolerances of 5 mm leave no room for eyeballing

On the narrow samples, the tape sits 5 mm from each edge. A hand-applied strip drifts by more than that before lunch. The machine's rated positioning accuracy is 2 to 3 mm, which is what makes a 5 mm margin repeatable instead of aspirational.

2.4 Manual work does not scale with the order book

Hiring a fourth operator solves one peak season and creates a fixed cost for the other ten months. The company wanted the taping step to stop being the constraint, not to add capacity it would have to carry all year.

3. Our Custom Machine Solution

We quoted two machines instead of one, and that was the whole recommendation. A single unit cannot cut tape with a blade on rectangular work and with scissors on narrow strips without compromising both.

3.1 Why two machines, not one bigger one

The blade machine is the workhorse. It runs the rectangular jobs, cuts with a rotary blade, and moves fast because the blade cuts on a straight register. The scissors machine is the specialist. It cuts tape by shearing, so it can handle narrow strips, short runs and shapes that give a blade nothing to follow.

Running both means the shop routes each job to the right machine instead of forcing every SKU through one setup. On a forty-job month, that routing decision saves more time than any single speed upgrade.

Accuracy and lead time are the platform ratings for this machine family; the working widths, voltage and control language are the customised items on this order.

3.2 Four things we changed for this client

  • 220 V single phase, 60 Hz. The standard export build is three-phase 380 V. Colombia runs 60 Hz, and a machine wired for 50 Hz will run at the wrong speed or not at all. This is the first question we ask any buyer in the Americas.
  • Spanish PLC interface. The operators read the screens in their own language, which matters more than it sounds when the recipe names are technical. English menus were not an option for this client.
  • Logo printed on the machine body. The client supplied a vector file during quotation, and the artwork went to the frame line before assembly started.
  • Samples shipped with the machines. The tested samples travel in the same crate, so the operators can compare what the machine did in our factory with what it does in theirs.

The full parameter sheet for the base unit is on the automatic double sided tape applicator product page.

3.3 Why the front and rear heads matter

Two heads mean a sheet can take tape at both ends in one pass, without turning it over or running it twice. For insert work, where the tape pattern is often symmetric, that halves the handling per piece. It also means a job that used to need two stations now needs one.

If you are choosing between cutting methods, our blade vs scissors tape applicator guide walks through the shape and margin cases that decide it.

4. Implementation & On-Site Support

4.1 Ten samples, one table, one honest answer

Before the quotation was signed, the client sent a set of finished samples covering the full range of their work. We ran all ten, photographed each result, and returned a table listing every sample's size, tape width, edge margin, test result and the machine build it needed.

Nine of the ten ran clean. Six of those ran on the standard blade build. Three, all narrow strips with a 5 mm margin, needed the scissors setup, which is where the second machine came from. One did not run at all.

That one was 30 mm by 85 mm. It is below the machine's minimum working size of 100 mm by 100 mm, and no taping machine in this class will handle it. We said so in the table rather than quoting a workaround. The client appreciated the honesty more than a promise, and the rest of the range went ahead.

4.2 Samples, videos and a quotation in the client's language

The client asked to see both automatic and manual feeding before deciding. We sent two videos: one of the automatic feeder indexing sheets, one of the manual station, so the comparison was theirs to make. The quotation followed in Spanish, with the working width for the second machine corrected to 1,000 mm and confirmed in writing.

4.3 Crating and shipping

Both units were wrapped, mounted on timber pallets and enclosed in plywood cases, with the heads locked and the tape spools packed separately. The tested samples went into the same shipment, bagged and labelled by sample number so they could be matched to the test table.

4.4 Training in Spanish, support after commissioning

Commissioning support ran in Spanish, covering stack loading, tape threading, head height and angle, recipe selection for each sample family, and the daily cleaning that keeps a blade cutting clean. The machines carry a one-year warranty with free replacement parts, and the technical team that built them handles the questions afterwards.

The client's first questions were about tape types and material compatibility, asked before the order and answered with a test rather than an opinion. That pattern continued after delivery.

5. Measurable Results After Deployment

Absolute throughput on this line depends on part size, so the table uses an index with the manual bench set at 100.

Output

Three times the manual rate from the two tape applicators, on the same order book, with one operator instead of three. The gain is not only speed. The machine never stops to peel a liner, never loses its place, and never slows down after lunch.

Labour

Two operators moved to other stations. That is the number the client cared about most, because it converts a variable cost into capacity elsewhere in the plant.

Flexibility

The dual-machine setup is what makes the flexibility claim real. A shop with one machine routes everything through one cutter. This shop routes by shape: rectangles to the blade machine, narrow strips and shaped pieces to the scissors machine. Both run automatic feeding, so neither needs an operator standing at the infeed.

Payback

Two machines cost more than one. They also removed two operators from a single step and unlocked batch orders the company used to decline. On the client's volumes, the pair pays back inside the first year.

Figures are based on the client's production records at commissioning. Your result depends on part size, tape width, order mix and shift pattern.

If you run mixed shapes and small batches, our tape applicator selection guide sets out how to split work between a blade machine and a scissors machine.

5. Feedback From The Client

"We sent samples because we were not sure one machine could do everything we make. The table came back with a machine recommendation for each one, and one sample marked as impossible. That is the answer we needed, even though we did not like it at first."

"Two machines sounded expensive until we counted the people. The narrow strips used to slow the whole shift down. Now they go to the second machine and nobody waits."

The purchasing team's summary was practical: the taping step stopped being the reason an order shipped late. That is the outcome the numbers in this article are really measuring.

6. Key Takeaways for Similar Factories

Match the cutter to the shape, not to the price

A rotary blade is cheaper, faster and better on rectangular paper. It cannot cut tape on a 3.8 cm strip with a 5 mm margin, because the blade has nothing to register against. If your order book includes narrow strips or shaped pieces, budget for the scissors build from the start rather than discovering it after the first rejection.

Test ten samples, not one

One sample proves the machine can run your easiest job. Ten samples prove it can run your range. Send the widest, the narrowest, the thinnest and the one you think will fail. A supplier who returns a table with measured results, including the failures, is telling you how they will behave after the invoice is paid.

Specify the voltage and the language before you sign

Voltage mismatches are the most common reason a machine arrives and sits. Colombia, Peru, Mexico and parts of Brazil run 60 Hz; most export builds leave the factory at 50 Hz. Ask for the PLC language you will actually use on the floor, and get both written into the order.

Plan the routing, not just the purchase

Two machines only pay back if jobs are routed sensibly. Decide before delivery which SKU families go to which cutter, and train the operators on both. Without that routing rule, the second machine becomes a spare.

Checklist before you request a quotation

  1. Ten representative samples, including your narrowest and largest
  2. Tape widths used on each, in mm
  3. Edge margin and tolerance your assembly allows
  4. Minimum and maximum part size you will accept orders for
  5. Local voltage, phase and frequency
  6. Required lead time, and whether samples must ship with the machine

7. Get a Taping Solution for Your Line

Send us ten samples and the tape you use. We will run them on both tape applicators, photograph each result, and return a table showing which build handles which piece, including the ones that will not run. No estimate, no guesswork.

Request a free sample test and quotation — tell us your part sizes, tape widths and monthly volume, and we will reply with a machine configuration for your range and a costed comparison against your manual process.
