Production Process
Design and Artwork Preparation: The artwork is prepared and transferred to a flexographic plate, which will be mounted on the printing cylinder. These plates are usually made of flexible photopolymer material.
Plate Production: Using either laser engraving or photopolymer imaging, the flexible printing plates are created. These plates are attached to the plate cylinder for printing.
Ink Preparation: Flexographic inks are typically water-based, solvent-based, or UV-curable. These inks are prepared with the right viscosity for the substrate being printed.
Ink Reservoir and Anilox Roll: Ink is transferred from an ink fountain to an anilox roll, a cylindrical roller with tiny engraved cells. The anilox roll controls the amount of ink that gets transferred to the printing plate.
Ink Metering: A doctor blade is often used to scrape off excess ink from the anilox roll, ensuring a consistent and even amount of ink is applied.
Plate Cylinder: The printing plate, mounted on a plate cylinder, comes into contact with the inked anilox roll, picking up ink in the image areas.
Substrate Feeding: The substrate (e.g., paper, plastic film) is continuously fed through the printing press.
Impression Cylinder: The substrate is passed between the plate cylinder and the impression cylinder, which applies pressure to transfer the ink from the printing plate to the substrate.
Drying Units: After each color is applied, the substrate passes through a drying unit (using hot air, infrared, or UV light) to set or cure the ink before the next color is applied. This prevents smudging and ensures the inks are properly adhered to the substrate.
Rewinding or Cutting: Once the print job is completed, the printed substrate is rewound into rolls or cut into sheets, depending on the final application.
Quality Control: Throughout the process, quality control checks are conducted to ensure that the colors, alignment, and overall print quality meet the required standards.
Applicable
Corrugated Boxes: Flexography is ideal for printing on corrugated boxes used for shipping and storage.
Flexible Packaging: Often used for food packaging, flexible plastic, and foil packages.
Labels: Widely used for producing self-adhesive labels for various products like bottles, jars, and consumer goods packaging.
Food Wrappers: Flexographic printing is used to print on various food wrappers, especially flexible plastic films.
Beverage Cartons: Cartons for milk, juice, and other beverages are often printed using flexographic processes.
